CDC activates emergency response to screwworm infestations.
The New World Screwworm (NWS) is a devastating parasitic fly.
Unlike common flies, its larvae (maggots) feed on the living flesh and tissue
of warm-blooded animals and, rarely, humans.
USDA has identified New World Screwworm in an animal (calf) in Texas as
of June 3rd. Since that time, there have been 4 additional animal cases (cattle)
reported, as well as 1 case (dog) in New Mexico.
NWS was eradicated from the U.S. in 1966.
